Goodbye 2014

“Sometimes things don’t go, after all,
from bad to worse. Some years, muscadel
faces down frost; green thrives; the crops don’t fail.
Sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.

A people sometimes will step back from war,
elect an honest man, decide they care
enough, that they can’t leave some stranger poor.
Some men become what they were born for.

Sometimes our best intentions do not go
amiss; sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen; may it happen for you.”

friends and food

At last my longtime friends came for sunset-viewing and dinner. About time :-)

I need to feed more people in 2014. There hasn’t been enough of it lately. But cooking and serving up to a table of friends just feels right sometimes. A lot of the time. Except when I don’t want to :-)

Travelling is fun. So is coming home.

I’m feeling a bit agitated about all the things going on between now and Sunday, when I fly to Australia. So stopping to photograph wheeling pelicans against the sunset became much more important than rushing home to get started on the list.

It’s chilly tonight. I just closed my treehouse windows for the first time since, oh, March.

P.S. It rained.

I watched the birds fly home

Half an hour spent alone with the sunset, watching the birds fly home one by one. My well is filled.

morning has broken. day is done.

Morning has broken

Morning has broken, like the first morning.

monotone sunset

Day is done, gone the sun, from the sea, from the hills, from the sky.

Lately, my weekend routine has me seeing the break and end of day on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean. Between, I’ve been tucked away in my Topanga treehouse, sewing up a storm. I’m just about done with the overseas Christmas stuff. Hopefully all will be mailed this coming week. Then I tackle the US gifts.

I am so very content these days. I somehow wangled myself a fabulous life.

have i mentioned lately …

Dinner with friends

I hung out with my Malibu buds this afternoon/evening. Have I mentioned lately how much I love my life?

North of Yuma, east of Salton Sea, Picacho State Recreation Area comprises miles of desert desolation along the beautiful Colorado River.

When David emailed me a while ago saying he’d be in Phoenix for a wedding, and suggesting some wilderness exploration, I picked Picacho as our destination. (And marveled that we’d see each other three times in five months. Which is probably more than we had in the previous ten years.)

It was a great choice. The weather was perfect and the campground empty. Of the 54 campsites, only 2 were occupied, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Well, except for the raccoons.

the desert is so strangely beautiful

It felt so good to unplug, unwind, hike, swim, and cook over an open fire. I heart camping. I just need a better sleeping pad.

Daylight savings ends soon, and I’ll still be in the office most days when the sun goes down. I sure am going to miss you, crazy ass sunsets.
